Walhalla Crown Land properties
The responsibilities of the delegated Crown Land properties include improving the visitor experience, protecting and restoring assets, and contemporising systems and processes.
Walhalla Heritage Inc. has management responsibilities for the following Crown Land assets:
➡ Chinese Gardens Campground
➡ Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine
➡ Mechanics Institute
➡ Old Post & Telegraph Office Museum
➡ Walhalla Goldfields Railway operating line between Walhalla-Thomson (under lease)
➡ Thomson-Erica railway reserve (proposed future extension of the Railway)
➡ Former Walhalla State School No 957
Delegation of Crown Land assets to Walhalla Heritage Inc (WH)
Crown Land reserves throughout Victoria have historically been managed by Committees of Management or in the case of Walhalla, a Board of Management (BoM). As of 1 July 2026 WH assumed responsibility for these sites, which are managed in conjunction with the Corner Stores Post Office, retail shop, Museum, ‘Walhalla Alive!’ virtual reality and our Ghost tours. All paid staff of the former BoM transferred to WH employment with the same conditions as before.
WH wishes to convey its thanks to the former volunteer Board of Management members who cared for these sites for over 30 years.
