Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get to Walhalla?
If you are travelling from Melbourne on the Princes Freeway, Walhalla is about 45 minutes north of Moe. If you are travelling from East Gippsland, follow the marked signs to Walhalla at Traralgon. If you travel via Erica and Rawson it is a sealed (bitumen) road all the way.
Please note: while there is mobile phone coverage for the majority of the way to Wahalla, the Walhalla road itself has a few “black holes” and may drop out of range. Just keep following the road to Walhalla - be aware that some mapping apps may not be accurate. The road to Walhalla is fully sealed - be very wary of map shortcuts that may direct you to very rough bush tracks.
Remember to drive carefully!
Is Walhalla a Museum?
Walhalla is a living town, not a museum. Please respect residents’ rights and do not enter any properties which are not clearly signposted as businesses. `
As the town has a small permanent population please advise businesses of your planned visit if more than 20 people are coming. This will ensure prompt, friendly service!
Please keep noise from campsites to a minimum after 9.00 pm.
Do not shine torches onto private property and through windows.
Planning ahead… Make sure you have enough fuel
There is NO FUEL available in Erica, Rawson or Walhalla. Please fill up at Moe, Morwell, Tyers or Traralgon on your way to Walhalla.
If you intend travelling north of Walhalla towards Woods Point, the nearest fuel is at Jamieson, 150km away - at least a three-hour drive. At the current time there is no 24 Hr public EV charger in town, there is a private one at the Star Hotel which may be accessed by the public for a small fee.
The unsealed road north of Walhalla is not suitable for conventional 2WD vehicles, trucks, or buses. A signed bus turning area is 200m north of the North Gardens Camping Ground.
The speed limit throughout the town centre is 30km per hour, which is enforced.
There is limited parking in the Walhalla town centre on long weekends and busy periods. Consider parking further south and walking the 100-200m to the town centre.
If you are visiting the Walhalla Goldfields Railway, please park at the public facility just outside the station entrance. The station car park has very limited parking and is unsuitable for large vehicles and 4WDs.
