Walhalla Cricket Ground

ABOUT THE WALHALLA CRICKET GROUND

Perched high above the township, the Walhalla Cricket Ground is one of Australia's most remarkable sporting venues. Accessible via a scenic walking track from Walhalla Road, the ground sits atop a mountain overlooking the historic goldfields.

With little level land available in the narrow valley, local miners undertook the extraordinary task of carving the summit from the hillside during their spare time. Completed in 1882, the project transformed the mountaintop into a sporting ground that remains a testament to the determination and ingenuity of Walhalla's community. The steep climb to the oval—combined with the long journey into Walhalla—was said to provide the home team with a distinct advantage over visiting sides.

Cricket has been part of Walhalla's history since 1870, when local enthusiasts formally established the Walhalla Cricket Club, known as the "Walhalla Eleven." Under the leadership of prominent mining manager Mt William Gairdner, the club successfully sought to reserve the land for sporting use and raised funds to continue clearing and developing the site.

Once there, take your time exploring one of Australia's most unique sporting venues while soaking in the panoramic views over Walhalla and the surrounding Gippsland ranges.

During the height of the gold rush, the ground hosted regular cricket matches and football competitions, becoming a vibrant social hub for the mining community. Although large-scale mining ended in the early twentieth century, the ground has remained an enduring symbol of Walhalla's heritage, attracting visitors from across Australia and occasionally hosting community cricket matches. Its unique setting has even inspired popular culture, including a reference in The Ghosts of Walhalla by Weddings Parties Anything.

In recent years, the ground has demonstrated the resilience of the Walhalla community. Following a major restoration of the playing surface in 2017, the devastating bushfires of 2019 destroyed the oval, synthetic pitch, and surrounding vegetation. Thanks to a significant community effort, the cricket ground has since been fully restored and continues to be one of Walhalla's most iconic landmarks.
