World Heritage Bid

February 2024

Walhalla is currently being considered for World Heritage Listing by UNESCO. Inclusion as a World Heritage site would acknowledge Walhalla’s place as a significant site of historic importance during the Gold Rush era of the 19th Century.

Working through the application process could take five years or more. The campaign for World Heritage Listing is part of a collaborative effort between the following local government areas: Baw Baw Shire, Indigo Shire, Ararat Rural Council, Campaspe Shire Council, Central Goldfields Shire Council, City of Ballarat Council, City of Greater Bendigo Council, Golden Plains Shire Council, Hepburn Shire Council, Loddon Shire Council, Macedon Ranges Shire Council, Mount Alexander Shire, Moorabool Shire Council, Mount Alexander Shire Council, and Pyrenees Shire Council

After 13 shires from Central Victoria Goldfields area commenced the bidding process, a visit from a World Heritage expert from the UK said that “Walhalla was the third most significant mining area in terms of the value of gold extracted”.
